The Importance of Having Strong Feet
The feet are often considered the foundation of the body. There are numerous benefits to having strong feet, and this can be encouraged by performing proper foot exercises. Additionally, flexibility can be attained by exercising the feet, and this may positively affect balance and support of the body’s weight. There are simple ways to accomplish this, and several of these stretching exercises involve the use of a towel. When the calves are stretched, the benefits extend to the ankles and feet, which can improve circulation. While seated, fully extend the leg, wrap the towel around the sole of the foot, and gently pull forward. Typically, you’ll feel moderate tension, and it’s beneficial to hold this position for 30 seconds. These stretches not only feel good, but will strengthen the muscles and tendons in the feet. Please consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist to learn more about the benefits of exercising the feet.
Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New York Foot and Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes and Treatment of Cracked Heels
If severe dryness is experienced on the heels of the foot, it may lead to a condition referred to as cracked heels. Calluses will form to protect the skin, and may often split open, possibly leading to a painful infection. Poorly fitting shoes, shoes with exposed backs, obesity, and eczema are among the many reasons for cracked heels to develop. If daily activities include standing for long periods of time, further damage may occur because of the constant pressure the heels must endure. Applying a moisturizer daily will not only feel good, but will help to eliminate the dryness associated with cracked heels. A consultation with a podiatrist is advised to discuss the removal of calluses from severely cracked heels.

There are several techniques that can be practiced for optimum foot care, including checking the feet daily for any cuts or redness, cutting the toenails correctly, and washing and drying thoroughly between the toes. Choosing to wear shoes that fit well will not only feel comfortable, but will be beneficial in avoiding conditions that may lead to sores and infections. Foot Conditions Caused by Obesity
Fallen arches are a common result of being obese. The feet provide a natural support system for the body, and imbalance may occur due to the excess weight the feet must withstand. The feet may also grow in size due to excess pressure and swelling. The ankles will be surrounded by fat tissues and cells, which may cause immense pain and difficulty walking. Pressure that settles on the ankle often makes it painful to wear shoes. Bending over to put them on may be challenging because of the additional weight the body must endure. Fat and sugar deposits surrounding the ankle may weaken the structure of the foot, commonly causing serious complications and discomfort. This condition may be prevented by implementing dietary and lifestyle changes, thus improving not only the general health of the feet, but the rest of the body as well.
Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New York Foot and Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Obesity and Your Feet
Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.
Problems & Complications
Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.
Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.
Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

Causes of Hammertoe
Hammertoe is caused by a deformity that bends the toes, causing them to be crooked. The joint affected is located at the bottom of the big toe and can often appear unsightly. The skin on top of the toes may look swollen, and corns and calluses will often form there, typically caused by friction as it rubs against the shoes. Causes of hammertoe are commonly due to shoes fitting poorly, which may cause the toes to be constricted for long periods of time. There may be a predisposed genetic trait that may cause this condition, in addition to diabetic patients and arthritis sufferers being prone to hammertoe. There are numerous treatment options available, depending on the severity of this condition. A consultation with a podiatrist is suggested for a proper diagnosis.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from New York Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
- Pain in the affected toes
- Development of corns or calluses due to friction
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Contracture of the toes
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Causes of Poor Circulation
There are many causes of poor circulation in the feet, and two of the most common causes are diabetes and atherosclerosis. The latter is a process where fat builds up and narrows the blood vessels, making it difficult for the blood to flow. Some of the symptoms experienced may be cold feet, pain while walking, or the feet appearing pale. If you smoke, you may want to consider stopping because this may improve circulation. When healthy lifestyle habits are practiced, the chances of having poor circulation is decreased. This includes eating fruits and vegetables, in addition to drinking plenty of fresh water. It’s important to limit unhealthy fare such as foods that are fried, cream desserts, and fast foods. Making the decision to exercise will not only improve poor circulation, but will also benefit the entire body. Be sure to speak with a podiatrist if you think you have poor circulation in the feet.
Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of New York Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
Poor Circulation in the Feet
Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.
Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.
Causes
Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:
- Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
- Numbness or cramping in the legs
- Skin discoloration
- Slower nail & hair growth
- Erectile dysfunction
Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.
As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Does My Child Have Flat Feet?
Flat feet is a condition that often refers to the arch appearing flat while walking or standing. It’s a natural condition commonly seen in infants and young children, and it will often correct itself as the foot becomes stronger. Occasional pain is associated with flat feet and is usually noticed while walking or running. The entire foot may feel pain and discomfort, or it may be in a specific area. It’s important to note if your child is experiencing these symptoms, as the condition may affect the structure of the growing foot. It’s possible that this condition may stem from underlying causes including certain forms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or a predisposed inherited disorder. If the child is heavy in weight, obesity may be a contributing factor due to the additional weight placed on the feet. The condition typically does not require treatment unless the pain is affecting daily activities. If you think your child may have flat feet or is experiencing pain, please consider a consultation with a podiatrist.
Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New York Foot and Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.
Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.
Symptoms
- Pain around the heel or arch area
- Trouble standing on the tip toe
- Swelling around the inside of the ankle
- Flat look to one or both feet
- Having your shoes feel uneven when worn
Treatment
If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Franklin Square, Bethpage, Bronx, and Brooklyn, NY. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
